Polyphony - a stylistic approach for guitar (method book)

My biggest advice for you before taking this journey is to use the information suggested as a medium for your own creative process. This book will open a door for you to an area which not many have visited. In this book I will deal with the process of applying polyphony as a technique for composing and improvising. Once you get comfortable with this vocabulary you may apply it to your favorite style.

The decision to explore this way of addressing the instrument came from the understanding that I wanted to control polyphony in real time. Instead of executing an arrangement which I made beforehand I wanted to see many possibilities in any given moment. In order to control these techniques in improvisation I had to develop a practice plan which would guide me towards my ultimate goal: enlarging my guitar sound through melody and harmony by using various techniques and approaches which are mainly related to the application of polyphony on the guitar.

I discovered that all my favorite artist who incorporated polyphony in their style had extensive experience with classical music. Therefore my first step was getting into classical music and its guitar techniques. By analyzing and modifying passages I gained polyphonic vocabulary which later on I could apply in other styles.

The guitar is by nature a grip instrument, therefore it is less obvious to address it with multiple independent melodies. One should train one's hand to function as two hands using dynamics, different timber, sound and sometimes seemingly impossible fingerings.

This method-book will focus on expanding your guitar abilities through melody and harmony, using the romantic idea of the “naked guitar” sound that comes from the classical approach of playing the instrument.

Don't rush and enjoy the process.

Sincerely yours Eran
